This drawing was made at Codford Camp in 1941/2. It depicts a soldier writing a letter home – an important war-time activity among the troops. Vaughan has decorated the cover of one of his ring-bound sketchbooks – presumably needing to do so, paper being a scarce commodity. Whenever he had spare time, he spent it drawing and painting, recording the daily activity of his comrades.
